National Museum of Singapore’s New Social Space: Reunion

by | Dec 9, 2024 | Lifestyle & Wellness, Wellness

The National Museum of Singapore has created a social space called Reunion, designed specifically for seniors. This initiative underscores the museum’s commitment to making art and cultural experiences accessible to everyone, particularly older adults.

Inclusive Programmes for Seniors

Reunion offers a variety of senior-friendly programmes that cater to individuals with mild cognitive impairment and dementia. These programmes are crafted to facilitate meaningful interactions, allowing seniors to reconnect with their past and engage in shared experiences with peers. From interactive games to activities designed to stimulate cognitive function, Reunion aims to provide a supportive environment where seniors can thrive.

In addition to these enriching programmes, seniors can enjoy wholesome meals and pleasant conversations at the adjacent Café Brera. This café provides a welcoming space for seniors to relax and socialise, offering a general and special menu tailored to those with specific dietary needs, such as dysphagia.

Accessibility and Open Visits

While pre-registration is required to participate in the scheduled programmes, the Reunion space is open to all visitors, including those who prefer to drop by without prior registration. On days when no programmes are scheduled, visitors are encouraged to walk in and explore the space before resuming their museum visit. This flexibility ensures seniors can experience the benefits of the new social space.

Design Features for Seniors

The design of Reunion incorporates several features that enhance accessibility and comfort for seniors. The space is divided into four main areas: Memory Lane, Activity Space, Quiet Room, and Music Booth. Each area is thoughtfully designed to encourage engagement and provide a soothing environment.

  • Memory Lane: This area features a rattan wall that evokes nostalgic textures, paying homage to local heritage. It also includes calming nature elements and soothing colours that create a relaxing atmosphere.
  • Activity Space: Interactive games and activities are integrated here, promoting cognitive stimulation and social interaction.
  • Quiet Room: A serene space designed for reflection and relaxation.
  • Music Booth: An area dedicated to enjoying music can be particularly beneficial for emotional well-being.

To ensure ease of use, the design incorporates large fonts for better readability and various seating options, including chairs with and without armrests, to accommodate different mobility needs. Artwork from the William Farquhar Collection of Natural History Drawings, including images of animals, plants, and fruits, adds an enriching visual element to the space.

Reunion at the National Museum of Singapore is a testament to the belief that art and cultural engagement are for everyone, regardless of age or ability. Creating an inclusive and supportive space allows the museum to set a new standard for age-friendly environments. Whether you’re participating in a programme or simply enjoying the café, Reunion offers a welcoming and enriching experience for seniors.
